I sincerely apologize for not updating this blog earlier, as I have already sculpted and glazed several new pieces. The piece shown here is titled "Drifter'', and it took inspiration from sharks and pterosaurs. Its blue color and lifeless expression represents the feeling that one may be ''drifting'' through life without a purpose. This cube-shaped sculpture is currently untitled, but it was meant to resemble a generic video game enemy. I wanted it to look more silly than scary, and I think I succeeded. The piece here hasn't been glazed yet, but it took inspiration from craters, coral, and underwater vents. Oddly enough, it bears a resemblance to another piece I made known as "Timid''.
There was another new piece titled (and inspired by) the harpy of Greek mythology, but the piece was unfortunately lost. However, I can't say I miss it that much, since I feel it looked just like my other pinch-pot sculptures, but with wings.

I described this sculpture in a previous post, and I stuck to my promise of making it brightly colored. This is my personal favorite piece so far, as its cheerful expression makes me smile. The unnamed piece was glazed with characters like Spongebob in mind, but it also bears a resemblance to Joy from the film Inside Out. My newest piece, which took some inspiration from The Muppets, will be taken to the kiln for firing tomorrow. It will be glazed brightly to fit with its cheerful expression, in contrast to my previous pieces, which all looked either angry, menacing, or somewhat creepy. Since I still have approximately fifteen more pieces to sculpt, fire, and glaze, there is definitely opportunity to make other simple, cheery pieces such as this one. "Tar Beast'' was meant to look threatening, as the color black is often associated with death. It also took some inspiration from the Heartless in Kingdom Hearts (see http://www.khwiki.com/images/d/de/Shadow_KHII.png) , as well as the fact that animals' eyes can look yellow in certain light. This piece also was based on a sculpture I made last year, which I have affectionately dubbed "Fluffy'' |
